Lemon Pesto, Honey Mustard, and Maple Ginger Garlic MArinade: How to Prepare One Salmon Three Ways

Lately, I have been actively attempting to make the best use of this time we have at home in quarantine with the kids. More intention goes into my thoughts about food in a way that I never have thought before. It is not in my nature to be overly wasteful, but now I am continuously thinking about how to make the most out of everything that I have. Sam’s Club is typically my go-to store for some groceries. One of them being seafood because I like to buy their whole fresh fillet of salmon. Let me show you how to prepare one salmon three ways.

Make the Marinade

The fun part about making marinades for salmon is you really get to experiment with flavors. The kids and I got in the kitchen and just though about what we wanted to taste and made it come to life. One thing to note when making any marinade it that you do not want it to be too salty or too acidic. This can make the meat or seafood dry out or just plain too salty. You want to enjoy the flavors of what you are bringing together. Add fresh or even dried herbs, and don’t forget to add the oil. We went with lemon pesto, honey mustard, and ginger garlic to make my house favorite Maple Ginger and Garlic Salmon.

Divide the Salmon Fillet

When I start with whole salmon fillet, I think about what my family and I need. Right now, 4 servings suit us just find. With a whole salmon fillet I can get 8 uniform sliced fillets, the head, and the tail, giving me 10 pieces total. In the picture below you can see how I have “evenly” divided the fish. After dividing the fish, I place it in vacuum seal bags (use ziplock bags if that is what you have), pour the marinade in and seal.

Cooking requires thoughtful planning. Prepare one salmon three ways with these amazing flavors: lemon pesto, honey mustard, and maple ginger garlic.

Ingredients

Lemon Pesto

  • 1 - 1/2 tbsp of freshly squeezed lemon juice.
  • 3 tbsp of pesto 
  • 1 tbsp of oil

Honey Mustard

  • 2 tbsp dijon mustard
  • 3 tbsp of honey
  • 1/2 tbsp of dried chopped onions
  • 1/2 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp of black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp of salt
  • 1/2 tbsp of oil

Maple Ginger Garlic

  • 3 tbsp of fresh ginger (grated or chopped)
  • 2 cloves of garlic, crushed
  • 1/2 tsp of pepper
  • 1/2 tsp of salt
  • 1 tbsp of oil

Instructions

Blend the Marinades

In separate bowls, blend the marinades together. Taste the marinades to see if there is something more you would like to add to appease your taste buds. Remember to not oversalt the marinades.

Instructions for Maple Ginger Garlic marinade

When making this marinade, do not add the maple to the marinade. Add the maple only after the salmon is cooked because you want it to glaze the fish.
